Data is transferred serially through the 1-Wire® protocol, which requires one a single data lead and a ground return. The DS1963S-F5+ has 4096 bits of read/write nonvolatile memory organized into 16 pages of 256 bits each and can store over 10 years worthy of data. Eight of these memory pages have write-only 64 bit secrets and 32 bit read-only, non-rolling-over page write-cycle counters. To ensure for safe data transfers, the DS1963S-F5+ has an on-chip 16 bit CRC generator and a 156 bit scratchpad. Each iButton has its own 64 bit ROM registration number lasered into the chip to prove a unique, easy to trace identity. The on-chip 512 bit SHA 1 function computes a 160 bit Message Authentication Code (MAC) and generates page secrets.

The DS1963S-F5+ has a temperature range of -40°C to +85°C and the standard 16 mm diameter. The SHA-1 function is a 4K bit read/write data carrier.  Overdrive mode boosts the communication speed of the iButton® to 125 kbps.
